  7. Just to clarify- this is made with BULKY(5) not SUPER BULKY (6) right? I made it with super and it came out a little...um....big. ;)

  8. What is the magic circle? I am a new crocheter. I love this hat. I want to make it for my sister who has cancer. thank you

    1. Magic circle is a very quick and easy way to start anything that starts with a circle. The easiest way to explain it is, go to youtube and watch the redheart video on how to make a magic circle. It's easier to watch and do than explain. Hope this helps. :-)

  9. Can you make it with cotton? That's all I have on hand.

  10. I made mine with Lion Brand Hometown USA Sante Fe Tweed and it is HUGE!!!...too long and too big around.

  11. @Linda. The magic circle is a way to start the hat pattern. YouTube has some great tutorials on how to do it.

@Jennys. I used Thick and quick by lion brand.

@ Pauline. I updated the pattern to continue with hdc when changing the color. I tested the pattern tonight and it came out just like this one. I crochet very tight. You might want to go down a hook size if you find it to big and long. For a small adult I use K hook.

This pattern is for an ADULT size hat with a 22" head measurement.

I would not suggest using cotton as it is not thick enough, however try using two strands when crocheting.

    1. Thank you for clarifying! I actually used a bulky this time, keeping the original dc at the color change (cuz i like them!). It came out a little loose yet but i think it would fit normal adult perfectly (my head is small). I think i'll go down a hook size and it'll be perfect for me! Thanks!

    2. Thanks Shannon. It is a beautiful hat and perfect for this Downton Abbey fan!!!! I do crochet loosely so I stopped increasing at 40 stitches and it came out right for a 22" inch hat. Again, thanks so much for a wonderful pattern

  14. Thank you for the pattern. I used a K hook and Nature's Organic Cotton yarn for a toddler size. It's beautiful!

  15. I followed the directions using 6.5mm hook and Lion Brand Homespun yarn, and it came out a little too small. It fits my 9yo well though. It's a pretty simple, warm, beautiful hat! I guess I'll try it again in a 7mm hook.

  16. Just finished this pattern and am loving it to the hilt! Black with a gold flower and gold brim with a gold neck warmer to match.. Am on to another one using rust for the body and sage green for the brim with matching flower. Guess I'm on a crochet bender right now and I love the Downtown Abbey look. Keep 'em coming.

  17. P.S. - I messed up on the flower so the smaller petals were behind the larger ones. I simply attached it backwards and really like it. The petals are puffy and not curled like it should be...but it worked for me.

  18. The creations all sound so beautiful, I would love to see them. Let me know if you post it online anywhere.

  19. I have worked on this hat ripping it back 4 times now and finally have it going the way I want it to go. I found your chart at http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/originals/d4/be/3e/d4be3ef684b0aa78e8f2c672b6d1cb14.jpg and it has been so useful.
I am using a K or 6.5 mm hook, did one extra row (increased to 56 sts) to get the correct crown diameter plus hat circumference. Working on rows 7-11 right now and will know if I need to add extra rows when I get to row 11. Measuring and comparing to the chart is the key for me. Will probably do an extra row of the cream before doing the scallops.
Am excited enough that I will be making more of these hats down the road.

  20. I made this the other night -- I'm a relative newcomer to crochet and found it doable. I love the era and do some vintage dressing. I wore it tonight and everyone went wild for it. Am sending one gal the link to the pattern, and another I told her I'd make her one. I made it out of soft super bulky acrylic in grey and cream (they didn't have brown) with an L hook. It came out generous but comfortable. I'm 22-23 head size. My friend who tried it on, she'd like it about 1.5-2" smaller circumference so I'll try smaller needles. Thanks so much for creating and sharing it.

  21. I would like to make this for a child - any suggestions for sizing?

    ReplyDelete
  22. This is so pretty. I am making 'chemo caps' and donating to the Cancer center here. I will definitely make one or more of these hats for them.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I'd like to make this for a baby- how would I size it down?

    ReplyDelete
  24. To make this in a child's size I would suggest not making the crown so big. Maybe only do the first 3, rounds of increasing and then crochet around in each one for the length you need for a baby. I have not made it for a baby size.

    ReplyDelete
  25. for baby sizes you can goggle head circumference of infants that might help you pinterest has alot of charts if you look up crocheting hats for infants and youtube is great tooo. hope that helps!!

Downton Abbey has inspired so many fashions. Thanks for sharing this one with us. I think I will make it in dark red, with a black flower. I hope to make one for a cousin who is finishing up her chemo. Look forward to seeing more of your work, as soon as canning season is over. whew!

  27. I am in love with this hat. I can not wait to make one. I do have a question, do you allow individuals to sell items they make from your patterns? I just wanted to make sure. Thanks.

  28. Yes you may sell HANDMADE items, please give credit to me if you post the finished items anywhere on the web.

  29. Thank you for this pattern. I'm a beginner and had tried 2 other patterns I couldn't figure out before finding this one. Your directions were perfect and my hat came out so cute! My niece will be so happy with her new hat for Christmas. Thank you again for sharing.

  30. I am confused when it says "hdc in same stitch as joining" can you clarify? Do you join with a slip stitch and then continue with hdc? If so do you join with a slip stitch after each round including the first?

  31. what is the magic circle

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh yes!! I just finished making a pair of those handwarmers and they are gorgeous! I used slightly smaller than 1/2" round, bone buttons on mine instead of the small white, flat buttons. I am so pleased with them and I am going to also make this hat. Thank you to the lady who posted the pattern!

  33. Thank you. This is a lovely pattern. I'll be making it today with a less bulky yarn for a 12 year old.

  34. I love this hat! I am fairly new to crocheting and am having trouble when I go to start the next row...am I supposed to be doing a slip stitch where the "joining space" is...I am not really sure exactly what the joining space is...hahaha...any help would be great...

  38. I'm new at crocheting....I'm wondering I have half the hat done and my joining line is going crooked...has anyone else noticed that or am I doing something wrong....I join at the first crochet than chain one that hdc in the same crochet I joined

    1. You are on the right track it does go crooked slightly

  39. I made 1 for decor, it is very big, however I used my #6 Lion brand wool ease thick and quick and L hook. Now a cousin whose head measures 22 wants a hat, can I use my yarn and just drop down to a J hook ? or should i invest in just bulky thread? tyvm. I love the pattern , it is easy and I am 1 who has problems with every pattern it seems. So I really appreciate how well written it is, tyvm.

  47. Thank you for sharing this gorgeous pattern! I needed an extra round to fit
my rather big head using crochet hook size L (8mm). Looks beautiful and very vintage.

  48. The picture is different than the pattern. I noticed some or all of the hat was done in double crochet in the picture, all instructions are half double crochet. I'd like the hat to look like the picture. So can you give instructions for that?
