I designed these two simple crochet hats to make for cancer foundations around the USA I wanted to create a design that was very quick to work up, yet had a small design feature. I love the cross stitch worked into any pattern as it gives it dimension.
Once you get the generalization of how to create a hat and how to increase or decrease rounds for any size, then the pattern to design is endless.
You can work this pattern up with the cross stitches worked on every second row or you can work them in two consecutive rows Again have fun with the design.
I also wanted the hat to be able to be made for a boy or girl, and just by adding the scallop edge to the bottom of the hat, in place of the last round of single crochet for the boy, turns this into a girl hat. Take it one step farther and add a crochet flower for a girl or a puppy or monkey for a boy.
BASIC INSTRUCTIONS
I -Hook
Worsted weight yarn
Round 1 : Create a magic circle and put 12 dc in circle. Join to the first dc. (12DC)
Round 2: Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch, used as a filler), 2 dc in the same as joining and in each dc around. (24)
Round 3: Ch 2, 2 dc in same as joining, *dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * until the end, join with a slip stitch to first dc (not the ch 2)
Round 4: Ch 2, 2 dc in same as joining, *dc in next two dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * until the end, join with a slip stitch to first dc (not the ch 2).
Round 5: Ch 2, 2 dc in same as joining, *dc in next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeat from * until the end, join with a slip stitch to first dc (not the ch 2). (you should have 60 dc).
Round 6-7: Dc in each dc around (60).
Round 8: Ch 3, work cross stitch in the round. (60) (Click HERE for a tutorial I found on the web for the cross stitch.).
Round 9-10: Dc in each stitch (60).
Round 11: Ch 3 repeat row 8.
Round 12-13: Dc in each stitch.
Round 14 BOY HAT: sc in each stitch for boy hat. For the girl one follow below.
Round 14 GIRL HAT: ch 1, sc in same as ch 1, skip 1 stitch, *5 sc in next stitch, skip 1 stitch, sc in next stitch, repeat from * to the end.
For another girl style complete round 14 for a boy and then you will add a round 15 working only in the front loops. You will work the same as the girl hat round 14 but will do 5 dc in place of the 5 sc. This will give you the little brim like the 3 hats with the flower above. Again look at the placement of the cross stitch also for these 3 hats. I moved it them to the end so that they are the band for the flower.
Have fun with your creations. I will add more styles to this post once I complete them.
